| Netiquette
List discussions by email have the great advantage that all can make themselves heard if they want to, not overruled by non-verbal behavior. At the other hand, the medium is quite anonymous, so a few social conventions for discussion on the web should be mentioned, also known as netiquette. The basic attitude is that the highest level of cordiality and respect should be practised in order for all concerned to benefit. Discussions on ESMAC-L are in English. However in the European context we cannot afford to take the position that everyone understands English well. Therefore we must recognize and accept cultural and linguistic differences. So special understanding is required to deal with questions or statements from people for whom English is not the primary tongue. It is easy to forget that non native speakers are making an effort every time they post something to the list. People will make mistakes, sometimes appearing rude when they did not mean to, simply because they used the wrong word. Another cause of apparent rudeness is cultural difference. Things which are perfectly normal in one culture can be insulting in another. Additionally, care should be taken when using local idiom and slang. A common word or phrase used in everyday speech, for instance, might be taken as profanity or insult by others. ESMAC-L members that are native English speakers are advised to avoid non-standard English so as to provide the clearest and least-objectionable exchange of ideas. Flames (insults) belong in private mail, if they belong in mail at all. Discussions on ESMAC-L will often result in disagreements. Rebuttals to another person's opinions or beliefs should always be made in a rational, logical and mature manner. Subscribers should refrain from abusive or derogatory language that might be considered questionable by even the most liberal and open-minded of networkers. If you wouldn't say it in front of your mother, don't say it in electronic mail. Do not use ESMAC-L to sent private messages to people, whose address you have lost. ESMAC-L is configured so that everyone who responds to a posting, will respond to the whole list. Members are advised to put their email address in the body of their messages so that private responses are facilitated. Furthermore, the REVIEW command to the listserver will give you a copy of the list membership that you can search for the person's address. Unsolicited advertising and chain letters are not welcome on ESMAC-L.
